How to find a Facebook or Instagram ad you saw (even one you scrolled past)
Lost an ad you saw on Facebook or Instagram? Four ways to find it again: your ad activity, the advertiser's page, the Meta Ad Library, and a screenshot.
Short answer: if you clicked, saved or hid the ad, Facebook keeps it in your ad activity. If you remember the brand, open its page and look at the ads it's running in the Meta Ad Library. If all you have is a screenshot or a picture of the product, the Ad Library can't help (it only searches words), but an image search like Squinto can find the active ads that show it.
Here are the four ways, from the quickest to the one that works when you remember almost nothing.
1. Check your ad activity (if you clicked it)
Facebook keeps a list of the ads you recently interacted with.
- Open Facebook and go to Menu → Settings & privacy → Settings.
- Open Ad preferences, then Ad activity.
- You'll see the ads you recently clicked, saved or hid.
Instagram has a similar list under Your activity, but it only covers ads you interacted with.
The catch: if you only saw the ad and kept scrolling, it isn't stored anywhere in your account. Meta doesn't keep a history of the ads you were shown.
2. Go through the advertiser's page
If you remember the brand or the shop name:
- Search for its Facebook page or Instagram account.
- On Facebook, open the page's Page transparency section and choose Go to Ad Library. On Instagram, open the account's menu, then About this account.
- You'll see every ad the brand is running right now.
This works well for known brands. It doesn't work when the ad came from a store whose name you never noticed, which is most dropshipping and small-shop ads.
3. Search the Meta Ad Library with words
The Meta Ad Library lists every active ad on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network. You don't need an account to search it.
- Choose a country (or All) and the All ads category.
- Type what you remember from the ad's text: the product name, a slogan, an offer ("50% off", "free shipping").
- Filter by platform or media type if there are too many results.
The catch: the Library only searches the words in the ad and the advertiser's name. If the text was in another language, or you don't remember any of it, you'll scroll through hundreds of unrelated ads. See how to use the Meta Ad Library for the filters that help.
4. Search with a screenshot or a picture of the product
This is the method for when you remember what the product looked like, but not who sold it or what the ad said.
- Take a screenshot of the ad if you still have it in front of you. Or find any picture of the product: a photo, a store page, a post that showed it.
- Open Squinto and drop the picture in.
- Drag a box over the product only, not the whole screenshot. The tighter the box, the better the match.
- Press Squint. You get the active ads that show it, ranked by match, with how long each has been running.
The first search is free and needs no account.
What it can't do: it only finds ads that are still running. If the advertiser stopped the ad, it's gone from the active Library. Brand-new ads can also take up to a day to appear there.
Why the ad is so hard to find again
- Meta doesn't keep a "recently seen ads" list, only the ads you interacted with.
- Many ads come from small stores with forgettable names.
- The Ad Library searches text, not pictures, and most ads are mostly picture.
Quick summary
| What you remember | Best method | |---|---| | You clicked or saved it | Ad activity in your Facebook settings | | The brand or shop name | The advertiser's page → Ad Library | | A few words from the ad | Meta Ad Library keyword search | | Only what the product looked like | A screenshot or product picture in Squinto |
Questions
Can I find an ad I saw but didn't click? Not from your account history. Use the Ad Library if you remember words from the ad, or a picture search if you remember the product.
Can I find an ad that stopped running? Outside the EU, usually not: the Meta Ad Library only shows ads while they're active, except ads about social issues, elections or politics. Ads shown in the EU stay in the Library for a year after they last ran.
Does this work for Instagram ads? Yes. Instagram ads are in the same Meta Ad Library as Facebook ads, and Squinto searches both.
